Harris County in the state of Texas is a County encompassing the Houston, Baytown, Sugar Land, metropolitan areas. With a population of 4.1 million people it is the most populated county in the state of Texas and in the United States it is the third most populated county. Founded in 1836 the county is named after John Richardson Harris,who was one of the early settlers of Houston. The county was first founded as Harrisburg County on December 22, eight and 36 and in December 1839 it was changed to the current name Harris County.
The county has 1,778 square miles of which 49 square miles is water.
The adjacent counties to Harris County are Chambers County on the east, Galveston County of the Southeast, Brazoria County on the South, Fort Bend County on the Southwest, Waller County in the Northwest, Montgomery county and liberty County in the North.
